I'm a 53 year old extruckdriver and i suffer from sleep apnea, now sleep apnea is a common complaint which effects quite a few people.
Now what is sleep apnea well its a form of sleep deprevation basics are you dont get total sleep required to function properly.
Suffering from this could mean you are prone to fall asleep at any time during the day, which you could say is a good thing but no its not.
If you were in charge of machinery say you would be a danger to yourself any any other person close by.
It is basicaly say for me when i go to sleep at night i dont get in to R.E.M sleep where you say dream or as its known as rapid eye movement.
I had quite afew tests done before i was diagnosed with the condition and in one test i had to have a monitor attatched to me for three days to measure how much sleep i had.
And the result came back that during the night my breathing stopped 532 times now i know that seems alot it did to me.
But the doctor explained that during sleep you reach R.E.M but in my case i stopped breathing befor i ever got to that stage and because of that my brain had to wake me up and get me to breath again.
Now that did'nt mean fully awake just anough to get me to breath,so now every night i sleep with a face mask on from a CPAP machine which pumps air into me so that if i stop breathing my airways are still open.
That should keep me breathing its not very nice but i've gotten used to it and i would'nt sleep with out it as quite frankly it is keeping me alive.
Now you will be surprised that to know thier is quite a few people who suffer from sleep apnea but don't rearlise it they go to bed and are always tired during the day and cant explain why.
So my advice to anyone is go to your doctor if you suffer from sleep deprevation and get your selfs checked out it could be a life saver.
I say this because as ive said extruckdriver the reason for being ex is because i had a accident whilst driving my truck.
I collapsed at the wheel whilst driving i was out of it for no more than 10 seconds but i tell you this the truck carried on going on a crowded motorway for all that time.
It was bouncing off the hard shoulder bank but that could have been other traffic i could have hit even be responsable for someones death.
As it was no one was hurt not me or anybody else but just the truck had some damage lucky me hey.
But hey i'm still here so no harm done but i tell you i miss truckdriving but will never get behind the wheel of any truck whilst i have this disability.
